Environment
From implementing the latest advances in manufacturing technology to aggressively pursuing voluntary emission reductions, American Synthetic Rubber Company has established a strong and continuing commitment to the environment.
Environmental Investments
- Invested nearly $15 million to develop and implement environmental programs and initiatives
- Efforts include installation of seal-less pumps, maintaining a rigorous leak-detection
and repair program and the following:
- Developed self-contained water-treatment facility;
- Implemented gas chromatography for highly accurate monitoring of production systems;
- Installed a Flare Thermal Oxidizer to reduce emissions by 90%
Campground Natural Area Project
The Campground Natural Area project, located across the street from the ASRC facility, was created by a partnership between ASRC and Waste Management, Inc. The project began in 2009 and is anticipated to be complete by 2011. The project site - a 75 acre plot of land that was once a landfill for the Rubbertown area - will be home to four habitats: wildflower, forest, prairie and wetland.
The future of this project will be guided by volunteer efforts of ASRC employees. Some ideas for future plans include partnerships with local schools or other groups that may have an educational interest in utilizing the site, and the installation of a walking path for ASRC employee use. A pilot apiary was installed in April 2010.
Flare Thermal Oxidizer
The project cost approximately $3 million and reduced emissions by more than 91% since its installation in 2005.
ISO 14001 Certified
Since 2001, ASRC has been ISO 14001 certified. ASRC was the first chemical plant in Louisville to earn ISO 14001 status - an internationally recognized certification for environmental management and responsibility. It is awarded to manufacturing facilities that meet rigorous standards and keep environmental issues a top priority.
Master Member KY EXCEL
ASRC was named a Master Member of KY EXCEL, the environmental leadership program established in 2006 by the Department for Environmental Protection, which is designed to recognize voluntary efforts that improve Kentucky's environment.
